The common issues with all autistic children's behaviour due to which we get a lot of queries from different parents that "we are unable to understand the behaviour of our child why is she/he doing such behavior? Like our child is moving mouth, blinking eyes, pressing fingers against something or pinching someone, rolling over the floor continuously, jumping, nodding head, etcetera repeatedly." Parents fail to understand and at the early stage of the child growing they think that the child might be just playing or is normal and later take their child to visit doctor who prescribe medicine and when the parents do not see any improvement in their child they simply switch doctors and medicines but this slowly grows to severe and several different signs of autism. So let's understand this in detail and how, why, when, etc. develop in an Autistic child's behavior. First let us understand the term Sensory Integration Disorder :- It is a disorder in which a child faces problems in coordinating all the five sensory organs together to respond or react to any particular task or situation The reason is the Sensory Issue we all know that autistic children have Sensory Integration Issues. An autistic child cannot perform any task or use their five sensory organs together and face problems integrating it together. And when does this happen? When the child faces difficulty in receiving information and responding to it at the same time. After that, the child repeats the weird behavior to fulfill his or her sensory needs, which we call stimming or self stimulating. Now we must know what Is Stimming Or self stimulation, it is basically a repetitive motion and action which a child does to deal with his/her senses in some specific situation. Sensory organs and common stimming types:- Visual : Some children have sight sensory issues or vision related sensory issues to deal with this. The child constantly blinks his or her eyes or plays with the switch board by turning the light on and off to see or stare at the fan blade when the fan is switched on. Auditory : Auditory related sensory issues child having. We all must have seen that when there is a sound somewhere around the children like it can be a sound from television or any grinder or sound from some construction. No matter if the sound is not too loud or not too bearable but is mediocre which is just a normal sound not called noise. We all have noticed that the children close their ears with their hands to avoid the sound they hear? Because they feel it as the sound is too loud for them. Then we see that the children having auditory related sensory they make a sound like "mm mmm mmm mmm" a mumbling type of sound to deal with such an issue they will do humming. Or if they know any song or poem or any line which is their favorite, they constantly repeat it in a day. They will continuously repeat the line, they will repeat the poem, they will repeat the song every time in a day, like frequently. Olfactory (smell) and Gustatory (taste) : Children have taste related issues or smell related issues. You must have noticed that children pick anything and start licking it, then lick their hands, object licking. They even smell others, like other people. Then they smell other people's clothes and their hair. They even smell before eating anything. Tactile (touch) : Now children have sensory issues related to touch or we can call tactile in this where a child wants to pop something so he or she presses any object he or she sees in front of them. It makes them feel calm if they are frustrated or if they are hyperactive. This makes them feel calm. This makes them feel good. He or she will start rubbing themselves or their hands scratching themselves. Then vigorously rub themselves or they squeeze any object they find. Vestibular (balance) : Now children have vestibular related sensory or balanced related sensory issues in which the child spins his or herself body in the circle like merry go round until they feel dizzy, then jump frequently. They flap their hands continuously, or move their body right, left repeatedly. Proprioception (body awareness) : Now children are having issues with or related proprioception or body awareness in this where the child is unaware about how to react to any accident. Some don't even feel the pain and cannot express their emotions, and some don't even understand how to react if they see any danger ahead. Interoception sensory stimuli (internal body senses) : Now we come to the last one, which is an internal body sensory issue. Somewhere it is connected to the motor skills where a child cannot even tell whether they want to go to the toilet. They don't have bladder control, they cannot even give the sign that they want to go to the loo. They also don't have the ability to tell if they're feeling hungry or any Internal organ related issues. Treatment :- Now we come across the sensory integration therapy (SIT) or therapy in which a therapist provides treatment via occupational therapy and some activities which help a child to improve his or her sensory coordination together, helping to understand and learn the use of their all the senses work together which includes taste, hearing, touch, smell, sight, movement of the body, balance etc. It also helps in improving the motor skills, fine motor and gross motor to work accordingly and properly in any situation or to perform in a particular task given. It enhances sensory processing, improving self-regulation and behavior, and enhancing social skills and communication.
