CAN A ASD CHILD READ AND WRITE
ASD is called Autism Spectrum Disorder; it is a Disorder of neurodevelopmental disorder. Neurodevelopmental disorder is a mental disorder which directly affects our nervous system which includes the brain and spinal chord.
A child who is ASD fail to connect with others and their capacity to adopt something is very slow in everyday life. In day today life, Autistic Child are enable to do their daily routine like eating. Bathing,…. to do their daily routine they always need someone to beside them. They are lost in their imaginary world which is the main reason, autistic child fail to adapt grapes normal things.
Here a question arise, can a ASD child are able to read or write ….
An Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) faces many challenges in learning to read and write. The range of challenges for a child is different for every age group. The main challenge a child face is a developmental of foundation of their language and social skills .
One of the most important thing is how can you help your child with autism to spark their interest in reading and writing.
So some points are discus below:-
• START EARLY: To spark the interest in reading and writing you should start it at early stage. Starting at early stage, will help the child to take more interest in writing and reading .Here ,age is the main reason we should do it early because 2 to 5 year child are more capable of adapting things, as the child grows the developmental of brain becomes slow and their grapping of things or interest in reading and writing become slow.
• FOLLOW INTEREST:- to make a child take interest in writing and reading , it is very necessary to choose topics that your child enjoys. A child only takes interest when he /she enjoys doing if the child loves to listen rhymes truks or sharks, let them listen, this may help them to incorporate in their his or her life into reading process.
COLORING:- An autistic child do not like to sit at a particular place or they do not like to concentrate for a long time in short we can say they have poor patience level and poor eye contact. Colourings will help a child to sit at a place and concentrate on a particular thing this will increase their patience level and eye contact. Here what parents can to do is, they can draw something in the notebook and let the child do coloring this may arise interest in child.
• TIPS TO HELP TEACH AN AUTISTIC CHILD TO READ:- Children with ASD have low literacy skills in the same order or along the same time line as other children. To support their skill development requires structure and extra patience , but most importantly an acknowledgment of the incremental improvement no matter how small .
• PROVIDE DIRECT PHONICS INSTRUCTIONS:- Direct phonics instructions for reading and writing requires teaching the 44 consonant and vowel phonemes. Phonics instructions will help the child to breaks learing –to- read. In phonies a child will first learn the sounds of vowels and consonant, then they will learn step by step to read one word to another word. Teaching letters and sounds will help letter recognition and alphabet knowledge .
• USE PICTURE AND FLASHCARDS :- Children with autism are visual learners. They understand more clearly when the whole word is accompanied by its picture. Using flashcards you are using the picture and printed word on the same side of the cards . Use of flashcards is a best way to build a child ‘s vocabulary.
CONCLUTION :- With the right teaching approach , children with ASD are frequently able to learn and write successfully. Only small percentage of autistic children can not read and write, only those who have past their age of learning to read and write i;e 12 years, after this age a child grasping of things becomes slow.
Points mentioned above: start early, follow interest, what all tips will help an autistic child to read, giving them direct phonics instructions, use of pictures and flash cards will definitely help the child to read and write. If a child given best therapy will also help their brain to developed and grasp the things easily.
