Need of early identification in children with ASD. Although most professionals recognize the value of early identification and early intervention they have significant difficulty in identifying children with autism and other developmental delays and disorders. Parents are usually in the best position to observe and report what their children are doing. However for most parents it is the achievement of physical milestones which are of primary concern. Social, emotional and communication skills in general go unnoticed or are not paid too much of heed especially by doctors who is the family's first port of call. Parents are told not to worry and that their children Will "grow out of it" With the age. It is only when speech fails to develop or doesn't develop in an appropriate manner that parents then start seeking professional help. But by the time lot of time has been lost. It is therefore imperative to monitor a child's healthy development and to address concerns through a practice of routine developmental surveillance. After the child has been screened it is also important that a diagnosis is made so that the family can have access to appropriate services. The main purpose of early identification is early intervention.
