Definition of Hearing Impairment
Best audiologist in Hoshiarpur
A person is considered to have hearing impairment if they can only perceive sounds at or above 60 dB (decibels). In contrast, a person with normal hearing can detect sounds as low as 0.25 dB. Hearing-impaired children typically require sounds at 60 dB or higher to recognize them.
Why does this happen?
The ear contains three small bones – the Malleus, Incus, and Stapes. These bones act as transmitters of sound, carrying vibrations from the ear to the brain. First, the ear receives sound through these bones, and then the brain processes it to make sense of it. As long as these bones work properly, hearing remains normal. When their functioning is disrupted, hearing difficulties develop.
Types of Hearing Impairment
Conductive Hearing Impairment
Sensorineural Hearing Impairment
Mixed Hearing Impairment
1. Conductive Hearing Impairment
Speech and hearing clinic in Hoshiarpur
This type of hearing loss occurs when there is a problem in the transmission of sound through the outer or middle ear. If bone conduction remains within normal limits but air conduction is impaired, and the gap between the two measurements is more than 10 dB, it is classified as conductive hearing impairment.
2. Sensorineural Hearing Impairment
This form of hearing loss is connected to the sensory system. As you know, our body has five senses – touch, smell, hearing, vision, and taste. When the sensory pathway of hearing is affected, it results in sensorineural hearing impairment. In this condition, both air conduction and bone conduction are affected, but the difference between the two values is less than 10 dB.
3. Mixed Hearing Impairment
This condition combines features of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. In mixed hearing impairment, air conduction as well as bone conduction are impaired, and the gap between them is typically greater than 10 dB. This form of hearing loss is usually more complex and severe.
